Special Education
Oakwood Schools strives to provide a continuum of services to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
Oakwood Schools recognizes the importance of providing a specialized education for students with disabilities. Students within our district are provided educational services based upon the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA), the federal law governing special education. IDEIA requires public schools identify students with disabilities through a multi-factored evaluation (MFE) and then provide the students with a free and appropriate public education (FAPE).
Once a student has been identified as a student with a disability (SWD), the district and the parents work together to create an Individualized Education Program (IEP) in order to best meet the student’s specific needs.
Oakwood Schools strives to provide a continuum of services to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities. This continuum includes services within and outside of the general education classroom with an intervention specialist, services in a small group setting, speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, adapted physical education, mental health therapy and special transportation.
We also team with other educational entities, such as the Montgomery County Educational Service Center and South Community, to provide additional support to our students who we are not able to provide within the district.
Striving for optimal outcomes for our students
In 2023, Oakwood Schools began a multi-year, internal audit of its Special Education program to gather information regarding the structures, processes and services the District provides.
The Special Education audit is focused on gathering feedback in the form of guiding questions and data in order to identify the optimal program design and service delivery, focusing on improving outcomes for students with disabilities.
