Please make sure to read this important information about the summer program so you will be aware of changes from past summers.
Current South Connection Students & Those Registered for 2020-2021
All current South Connection students and those who were registered for 2020-2021 will have the opportunity to use Link A to apply for our program. If there is room in the program for your child, we will contact you with information on how to complete the registration process. A $55 nonrefundable registration and sunscreen fee is required for each child. Link A will become active Saturday, March 20, at 12:00 p.m. and will close at 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 24.
After that time, Link B can be used by anyone who has not applied, but could result in being placed on a waitlist. Each entry will be time stamped and programs will be filled in regards to the list that is generated by the data collected.
If a family wishes to enroll more than one student, a form must be submitted for each child. However, the time stamp for the first submission will be used for the entire family. Currently enrolled students will fill the first available spots in the program followed by those who were registered for 2020-2021 in the order of the time stamp.
Link B will become available to new students to apply March 24 at 9:00 p.m. Each entry will be time stamped and programs will be filled in regards to the list that is generated by the data collected. If a family wishes to enroll more than one student, a form must be submitted for each child. However, the time stamp for the first submission will be used for the entire family. If any spots remain open, we will contact you with information on how to complete the registration process. Those that do not get a spot will form the waitlist. Do not use Link A, since new students must complete Link B to be considered.
This year’s Summer South Connection operating hours will be 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. South Connection’s Summer Program will start June 7, 2021 and end Aug. 20, 2021. The charge for care is $175 per week per child. The fee is the same no matter how many days the child attends and must be paid by Friday of each week. Each child is allowed one week of vacation for this summer. We cannot accept doctor excuses. Anyone who has been mandated to quarantine by the health department will not be charged for the days missed due to COVID-19. Generally, South Connection will not be providing breakfast, lunch or snack. Children must pack a lunch including a drink and a snack daily. Take-out pizza and drinks will be delivered on Wednesdays for lunch. Children will wear face coverings indoors and also outdoors unless they stay six feet apart. We will promote social distancing, but children will no longer be divided by school. Children will spend some time in assigned seats (i.e. attendance, eating and table activities).
Parents will bring children to the back door of Lange (#5), where the daily health screen will take place. Parents must wear a face covering since they will be interacting with the check-in person and will not enter the building. Make sure your child has the following items each day: face covering, tee shirt or rash guard for sun protection, tennis shoes, swimsuit, towel (even children not going to the pool need bathing suits and towels), lunch, snack and filled water bottle.
Each child’s temperature will be taken with an infrared thermometer and will not be allowed in if it reads 100 degrees or higher. If the individual has had contact with someone confirmed or probable to have COVID-19, he or she must complete isolation or quarantine procedures in coordination with the local health department and school nurse prior to returning to the program. The child may return 24 hours after being fever free, without the use of fever-reducing medication.
Children should arrive to South Connection with sunscreen already applied. They will reapply sunscreen at 10 a.m. and also before their afternoon outdoor activities and again as needed. Please teach your children how to apply sunscreen, since we need to reduce touching. Staff will supervise the application and provide mirrors so children can cover their faces adequately. Whenever children wear swimsuits, either at South Connection or the pool, they must also wear a tee shirt or rash guard. This precaution is necessary to protect their backs and shoulders from the sun, since hard to reach areas may not be adequately sunscreened. If children do not have the extra shirt, they will not be able to wear their swimsuit. The tee shirt or rash guard will need to be taken home regularly and washed since it will be worn during water activities.
Oakwood Summer Reading Immersion
South Connection students will be able to attend this program. Those who have just completed kindergarten will attend classes Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Lange. The older readers will be transported to one of the elementary schools Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 9:30-11:30 a.m.
South Connection plans to transport students with pool passes to the OCC pool for the 11-1 and 1:30-3:30 time slots. Staff will be in charge of signing students up for time slots.
South Connection plans to transport to OCC tennis lessons at Orchardly Park for the first three sessions. If the OCC decides to have swim lessons or swim team, we will determine if South Connection can transport them depending on lesson procedures and timing.
Oakwood Schools vans will be used for most of our transportation. Six students will be seated in each van. Most field trips will be booked for two days so half the children would go each day. Only two or three trips will require using a Kettering bus, since we will all have to go at the same time.
Children will be participating in activities that are connected with a weekly theme. Some children will be on field trips while others will participate in activities at Lange.
South Connection staff will coordinate pick-up at the back double doors of Lange (#6). Drivers should never cross through the orange cones since children may be outside on the playground. Cars may park behind the cones or in the marked parking spaces. Please socially distance from others as you approach the building. While waiting for your child, be sure to observe 6-foot distancing by standing on one of the blue marks beside the porch. Parent’s must wear a face covering and will not enter the building, but should use the doorbell to get our attention. A South Connection staff member will bring your child to you at the door. The 5:30 p.m. closing time will be strictly enforced. The $1 per minute late penalty fee will be assessed for late pick-ups.
All of the following could result in dismissal from the summer program:
- Parents leave before child is checked in.
- Parents fail to pick up sick children in a timely manner.
- Parents pick up children past 5:30 p.m.
- Parents fail to pay weekly tuition by end of each week.
- Children fail to follow daily procedures and disrupt the program.
- Or any other action that goes against COVID-19 safety practices.
As new information becomes available, some restrictions may be added or relaxed. Thank you for understanding that this is a challenging venture for everyone involved. Let’s all work together to make it as safe and enjoyable as possible.
Thanks so much,
Christy and South Connection Staff
