Attendance

To comply with new legislative requirements under Ohio House Bill 96, Oakwood City Schools is implementing a new district attendance policy for the 2026–2027 school year. These state-mandated changes take effect in August 2026, and we are committed to providing families with the information they need to ensure a smooth transition.

Explore the New Attendance Policy

Student absences from school, whether excused, medically excused, or unexcused, reduce instructional time and adversely affect student learning. Here are the key things to know about the new attendance policy.

Count every absence. Excused, medically excused, and unexcused absences all count toward a student’s total hours missed during a school year.

Examine total instructional hours. The number of hours your child is allowed to miss before being considered chronically absent is based on the total instructional hours a student could receive during the school year: Lange (988 hours), Smith / Harman (1,111 hours), and Junior High / Senior High (1,080 hours).

Prevent chronic absenteeism. A student who misses more than 10% of their total instructional hours is identified as chronically absent. There is a wealth of evidence regarding the negative effects of chronic absenteeism on academic performance and other student outcomes. Thus, we will strive to help all students miss as little instruction as possible. It only takes 2–3 absences a month for a student to become chronically absent.

Expect early family notifications. Oakwood Schools will contact families regularly to share attendance data. Before a student reaches 5% of total instructional hours missed, the school will proactively work with students and families to identify barriers to attendance.

Engage in Early Absence Intervention Plans (AIP). The AIP process will begin before a student reaches 10% of total instructional hours missed, allowing families and staff to implement any interventions deemed helpful, thereby preventing a student from reaching the chronically absent threshold.

Review habitual truancy thresholds. Habitual truancy continues to apply only to unexcused absences of 30 consecutive hours, 42 hours in a month, or 72 hours in the year. Juvenile court involvement and enforcement have not changed.

Partner with our schools. Families will have multiple opportunities to work with the school and receive support well before any punitive action is necessary.

We are committed to a support-first approach concerning student attendance. We are updating when and how we communicate with families, but our focus remains on keeping students engaged in their learning and on track for graduation.
