In July, Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith announced potential increases for residential property values in Oakwood and around the county due to his office’s 2023 Property Value Update.  The state of Ohio requires the Montgomery County Auditor’s Office to conduct a “triennial” update of property values.  

An article published in The Oakwood Register on Aug. 9, 2023 entitled Oakwood residential property values to increase by 27 percent stated some residential property values could see a large increase due to Montgomery County attracting home owners.  And, while a property owner may receive a 25% increase in the property value rate, it does not mean the owner’s taxes will increase by 25%.  The article states the auditor’s office estimates an increase of about $104 per $100,000 of the assessed value of the home. 

We realize residents may have questions regarding how the proposed property values will impact the District’s upcoming levy.  A taxpayer always pays tax on their current property value. If the value increases, that value is multiplied by the EFFECTIVE tax rate. The effective tax rate changes (in this case, reduces) so the school district will continue to collect the same amount as originally certified by the county auditor.
