The Oakwood City School District is pleased to announce the hiring of Matthew Salyer as the new principal of Oakwood High School. Salyer, a Carlisle resident, is currently the principal at Van Buren Middle School in Kettering.

Salyer was selected for the role after a rigorous and extensive selection process. He brings 17 years of educational experience to the position, including three years in school administration.

“We are excited and proud to have Mr. Salyer joining our family at Oakwood,” said Superintendent Dr. Neil Gupta. “Matt embodies a student-centered approach to administration and possesses an unparalleled work ethic. His commitment to excellence and innovation in education is second to none, and we are confident that his leadership will be transformative for our school community. ”

Colleagues who have worked closely with Salyer describe him as someone who has an “unwavering commitment to student-centered education, a deep respect for diverse perspectives, and a genuine desire to foster collaborative problem-solving.”

Upon accepting the position, Mr. Salyer stated, “I am immensely honored to return to Oakwood. I look forward to collaborating with our dedicated staff to serve our students and foster a supportive and innovative educational environment that nurtures academic and personal growth.”

Mr. Salyer is a familiar face at Oakwood Junior and Senior High School, where he taught for thirteen years and held several leadership positions, including Department Chair and Head of the Oakwood Teachers Association Scholarship Committee.  Mr. Salyer was instrumental in developing supports and systems to address attendance and academic supports for all students.

Board President John Wilson expressed his enthusiasm about the new appointment, saying, “Matthew Salyer’s extensive experience and steadfast dedication to student achievement make him an exemplary choice for principal. His  commitment to educational excellence assures us that Oakwood High School will continue to set the standard for academic and extracurricular success under his leadership.”

Matthew Salyer’s official start date as principal of Oakwood High School will be August 1, 2024.
