Today marks the start of HOPE and Red Ribbon Weeks at Oakwood High School and Junior High! A variety of activities will be held to bring awareness to two important messages. HOPE Week is about bringing attention to the importance of mental wellness. Red Ribbon Week, which began nationally in 1985, is about acknowledging the importance of living a healthy life and avoiding the destruction drugs cause.
Members of HOPE Squad are working to break the stigma surrounding mental health needs. They hope other students will know it’s okay to ask for help.
HOPE Squad members will be sharing resources and organizing activities to help build mental fitness. From PJ Day to wearing school colors, each day there will be a different theme with an important message to raise student awareness.
- Monday: PJ Day - Self Care Day! Wear comfy clothing and take care of yourself.
- Tuesday: Tunes Tuesday - Music helps us to cope! Dress as your favorite music genre, artist, or music decade!
- Wednesday: Make Sour Things Sweet - Dress in bright colors to represent a positive, drug-free mindset. The more bright red the better in honor of Red Ribbon Week!
- Thursday: Stronger Together - Twin with your Advisory with the same color or theme. We are in this together!
- Friday: Blue and Gold - Wear your school colors to show your school spirit!
In addition, members of the OHS Building Our Lives Drug-Free (BOLD) student group will be sharing their message through a week-long campaign.
On Wednesday, BOLD members are encouraging Junior and Senior High students to wear red to bring attention the ideas associated with Red Ribbon Week. BOLD members recently created a display on Scarecrow Row to share their mission with the community. Throughout the week, different facts and resources will be shared with students through announcements and advisory activities.
Oakwood’s BOLD partners with the Montgomery County Prevention Coalition, a group composed of community leaders with a passion to prevent substance misuse and promote positive mental health, to organize Red Ribbon Week activities across the county.
On Friday, Chris Singleton, a nationally-known speaker sharing a message of resilience and forgiveness, will meet with Junior and Senior HIgh students. Singleton will share his story and help students understand the importance of leading with purpose.
We hope students will take advantage of all of the information, activities and messages throughout the week to help chart their course for a successful and productive life.
