Once again this year, Oakwood High School speech and debate will be represented at the National Speech and Debate Tournament. Junior Sam Stack and senior Sydney Hardern qualified for the top competition at the National District Qualifiers event. Stack will be competing in Humorous Interpretation and Hardern in Lincoln Douglas Debate.
In addition to the two national qualifiers, OHS debate won the District Sweepstakes Award as the best all-around debate team in Western Ohio. The OHS team qualified two more individuals for the State Tournament March 6-7. Junior Bahar Berksoy and sophomore Shayla Frederick will be joining 35 other OHS students at State. Berksoy qualified in Lincoln Douglas debate after finishing third. Frederick placed fourth in Program Oral Interpretation, earning a spot at State.
Also placing at the National District Qualifiers event were: Canaan Smith 2nd Lincoln Douglas Debate, Sophie Soller 5th Program Oral Interpretation, Lane Bokros 6th Program Oral Interpretation and Allie Wilson 7th place Dramatic Interpretation.
Nationals will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June.
OHS speech and debate is hosting the Second Annual Speech and Debate Showcase Monday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the OHS Auditorium. The event is open to the public.
