Oakwood High School Speech and Debate Team members kicked off the 2023 - 2024 season with an impressive turnout at Centerville Tournashop. More than 50 novice Speech and Debate students from Ohio competed in the event.
Sophomore Maze Li Kudera took 1st place in Dramatic Interpretation. Freshman Bea Drummy brought home 1st place in Original Oratory. Also placing first in their respective categories, sophomore Kay Handler in US Extemporaneous and freshman Graham Mhaskar in Congressional Debate Chamber B.
Sophomore Ruth Glaser earned a 2nd place award in Dramatic Interpretation. Freshman Amelia Butler placed 3rd in Lincoln Douglas Debate and freshman Charlotte Schnell 3rd in US Extemporaneous. In International Extemporaneous, senior Adam Chodkowski placed 3rd.
Other top finishers were freshman Grey Skorupan 4th place Congressional Debate Chamber A, Anna Guy 5th place Congressional Debate Chamber A, junior Aamah Williams 5th place Original Oratory, junior Noah Handler 5th place US Extemporaneous and freshman Caleb Walton 5th place Congressional Debate Chamber B.
The Speech and Debate season runs through March. Students qualifying for Nationals will have the opportunity to compete in the nationwide competition in June.
